Nature Holidays Experience at The Forbidden Hill, Fort Canning Singapore
Leave the city for a while. Feel the nature holidays experience at the Forbidden Hill, Fort Canning Park Singapore. Give your time some green holidays atmosphere.
Established in 1859 as an arms store, barracks and hospital, Fort Canning is now a park overlooking Orchard Road. It contains memorials of Singapore’s early history dating back to the 14th century and Sir Stamford Raffles’ personal bungalow.
Fort Canning Hill was also once known as “Forbidden Hill”. This is because Malays in the 19th century believed that it was the seat of royalty for rulers of Temasek (or “Sea Town”, an old name for Singapore) in the 1300s. Later, Singapore’s colonial leaders made their residences there, and the hill became a military base during the Second World War. Today, ancient relics dating back to the 14th century have been unearthed and the Fort Gate, remnant of the fortress built in the 1860s, is a reminder of Singapore’s colonial past.
For your nature green holidays, try to take a look for the Spice Garden, a small replica of the original 19-hectare tract Raffles established in 1822 as the first experimental and botanical garden in Singapore. Fort Canning is also a popular venue for the arts, including sculpture exhibitions, plays and open-air ballet.
Once you get over the climb up the stairs, Fort Canning is not only a wonderful hilltop retreat from the city filled with shady paths and hidden nooks, it’s a fascinating historical site.
