Katong Antiques House, Singapore
The Katong Antique House is a 25 year-old veritable museum of Peranakan artefacts, showcasing family heirlooms and antiques collected by its genial owner, Mr Peter Wee.
Curator and owner Peter Wee – who has been buying, restoring and selling Peranakan-related items since 1971 – has filled his family home with heirlooms: traditional Peranakan crockery, jewellery, beaded slippers, costumes, furniture and photographs of Singapore’s earlier generations of Babas and Bibiks.
In this place, Mr. Peter Wee, a fourth generation Baba Peranakan, will regale you with stories of his heritage. A little gallery sits on the top floor of the two-storey shophouse, which Mr. Wee inherited from his maternal grandfather, Mr. Tan Cheng Kee. Marvel at the intricately woven kasut manek or beaded slippers, charming furniture and wedding costumes.
